Captain Tom Fleischhauer, explains how to select the right amount of towing service protection:


 "Even though Unlimited Towing is my recommendation when it comes to covering all the bases, not all boaters need that much service. While the average cost of a tow is around $320 and the average soft ungrounding is $500, in reality, your boat size and cruising area will help determine the amount of service that's right for you. Here are some guidelines for the towing options we offer to current BoatU.S. Members.

 Most commercial towing companies usually charge by the hour Portal to Portal. In common language, they charge from the time they leave their dock until the time they return. Depending on day, night or bad weather services, charges can run up to or over $185 per hour.

In cases of "soft grounding", in addition to running time charges, towers often charge up to $12.00 per foot of your vessel length to pull you free.

 The Unlimited Towing Option is recommended for boaters who don't want to  worry about the cost of a soft grounding or being  towed from offshore. For boaters with larger boats & longer cruising area, unlimited is the way to go.

 $139 provides for Unlimited Towing Service - great for boaters that want the peace of mind that comes with unlimited service. Good within a 25 mile radius of TowBoatU.S. home port. We offer extended service areas in excess of 25 miles and even 50+ miles offshore. We'll even tow you home from the Bahamas. The plan covers up to $2,500 outside a TowBoatU.S. service  area; $71 and $89 gives you either $350 or $500 of service. This generally appeals to boaters with boat length between 16' & 25' that stay within close proximity of their port or towing destination.

 $37 gives you $150 of service - this amount is good for boaters who spend time on small inland lakes & rivers where there is a local TowBoatU.S. or marina services.

Of course it's better to be safe than sorry, but there's really no need to overspend."
